This post is updated when new official updates / PDFs are made by FamilySearch Indexing. Please check back often. Updates are also announced in the News Forums when they happen. Always check out all the pages and read the “Project Instructions” Tab before starting a new project. You never know where instructions might be. If after that you can't find an answer then Ask in Our Share Batch Section or start a new Thread in this section. Pleases do not reply and add share batches to this thread. They will be deleted from this thread. For the sample image above, the fields for the second record on the image would be indexed as follows: 1. Ship's Name: Hie Maru 2. Arrival Year: 1941 3. Surname: Higo 4. Given Names: Mankichi 5. Age: 58 6. Gender: M 7. Place of Birth or Nationality: Japan (This document has both a place of birth and a nationality column. The place of birth is broken down into two subcolumns. When there are two subcolumns, index only the information recorded in the country column.) Note that if information was given for both place of birth and nationality, you should index the information for the place of birth, not the nationality. The other records on the page would be indexed following the same pattern. - Second Page of Manifest

This is an example of a No Extractable Data Image. - List or Manifest of Aliens Employed as Members of the Crew
https://indexing.familysearch.org/proje ... ple44.html
This is an example of a list or manifest of aliens who were employed as members of the crew on the ship. All names on this document would be indexed. This project includes many manifests or lists of crew members and seamen, which should all be indexed. - Seamen Signed on at This Port
https://indexing.familysearch.org/proje ... ple45.html
This is an example of a list of seamen that were assigned to serve on the ship. All names on this document would be indexed, including the name of the shipmaster who signed the document. This project includes many manifests or lists of crew members and seamen, which should all be indexed. - Seamen Left In Hospital or Discharged Seamen
https://indexing.familysearch.org/proje ... ple46.html
This is an example of a list of seamen that were left in the hospital and also a form for discharged seaman. All names on this document would be indexed. This project includes many manifests or lists of crew members and seamen, which should all be indexed. - Affidavit
https://indexing.familysearch.org/proje ... ple40.html
This is an example of an affidavit. Affidavits do not contain passenger names. An image that only contains an affidavit should be marked as a No Extractable Data Image. Updates and Things to Remember:- last updated March 30, 2013
- All people on the ship or plane, including crew, agents, passengers, etc., are to be indexed. Only index people on the vessel. Do not include listed relatives, next of kin, whom the passenger was listed to visit, and so forth.
It is not necessary to index any signatures on the documents. - How to index Citzenship - https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki ... enship.pdf

- Q. Should I fill in the gender for Mrs Smith if it is not recorded? A. Yes, if the gender isn't specifically recorded, you can determine gender based on contextual information such as titles and terms. In this case, the title "Mrs" indicates the gender is female.
- Q. 2) Some partial manifests have no ship name or date. Should I enter the passengers? A. Yes, waypointing will resolve the problem.
